About the Organizers
New Turing Institute or NTI (formerly VietAI - a large community for AI enthusiasts in Vietnam since 2018) was founded in 2021 by Thang Luong, Thuc Vu, and Vu Van. NTI is a social enterprise dedicated to shaping the future cadre of global AI talent. Leveraging Silicon Valley expertise and a network of world-class professionals, NTI is building a vibrant deep-tech ecosystem. This ecosystem revolves around three core pillars: education, entrepreneurship, and research.
Rethink Healthcare Foundation (RHF) is a non-profit organization that aims to exponentiate healthcare prognosis globally to improve billions of lives. We do that by building a new healthcare ecosystem that is sustainable, democratic, and technology-propelled. In the immediate term, our strategic pillars include: education, research, and community building.
Fulbright University Vietnam (FUV) is Vietnam's first liberal arts university, founded on the promise of Vietnamese-American partnership. The mission of Fulbright University Vietnam (FUV) is to inspire new generations of leaders and ambitious thinkers of diverse origin to serve Vietnamese society and contribute to a better world. FUV practice and teach continuous innovation in pursuit of bold, ethical answers to local and global challenges.

About the summit

Summit Highlights
Keynote: Exciting Trends in Machine Learning by Jeff Dean
Abstract: In this talk Jeff Dean will highlight some of the most exciting trends in the field of AI and machine learning and discuss the Gemini family of multimodal models. Through a combination of improved algorithms and major efficiency improvements in ML-specialized
hardware, we are now able to build much more capable, general purpose machine learning than ever before. This has dramatic implications for the range of problems to which ML can be applied in the world. I'll highlight some of these applications in science, engineering,
health and sustainability, and also discuss ways in which we can gain a better understanding of ML systems and how they behave in the real world. This talk will present work done by many people at Google.

Building Human-Centered Large Language Models for Social Impact by Diyi Yang
Natural language processing (NLP) is evolving to become more aligned with human needs and behaviors. Diyi Yang will share insights into how recent advancements in NLP are transforming our interactions with technology. This talk will highlight the broader impact of these innovations on user experience and practical applications in various fields.

Insights and Lessons from Training LLMs as a Small Startup by Yi Tay
Abstract: Training competitive language models from scratch in a small startup environment with a relatively small budget is quite a novel endeavor that not many people may get the chance to experience. In this talk, he share experiences and insights in co-founding Reka AI, and training 3 competitive multimodal language models from scratch. In approximately four months from obtaining our compute resources and with less than 15 technical staff, we achieved GPT-4 level on LMSYS Chatbot Arena. In this talk, he describe challenges, insights and lessons learned from procuring computers, building the team, and training these models. He also share personal lessons I learned through this process.

Panel Discussion: AI Advancements and Futures
With Jeff Dean, Thang Luong, Quoc Le, Yi Tay, and Diyi Yang. Moderated by Truyen Tran. Our panelists will discuss the cutting-edge technologies driving the development of GenAI and large language models (LLMs) and share their predictions about the future.

From System 1 Thinking to System 2 Thinking by Quoc Le
Abstract: In this talk Quoc Le will discuss some of the most exciting works in the direction of System 2 thinking. Previously, most AI models were limited to pattern matching, and hence can only do System 1 thinking. Through a combination of recent work on advanced reasoning, such as Chain-of-Thought, Self-consistency, AlphaGeometry and AlphaProof, we begin to see the potential of having machines that can think and reason to solve highly complex problems. This talk will present work done by many people at Google.

Rethink Healthcare with AI by Wendy Nguyen & Anh Nguyen
Abstract: The Rethink Healthcare Foundation (RHF) is leading the way in integrating AI into healthcare, focusing on improving patient outcomes and operational efficiency. Wendy Nguyen and Anh Nguyen will highlight AI applications in healthcare, and RHF’s key research initiatives, including drug discovery and medical language translation,
demonstrating how AI is transforming patient care and making healthcare more accessible.

AI and the Future of Learning by Vu Van
Abstract: Vu Van, Co-Founder of ELSA Speak, will share how ELSA is transforming English language learning through AI, with a focus on GenAI and personalized learning paths. By leveraging GenAI technology and their specialized LLM model, ELSA empowers non-native speakers to speak more clearly and confidently. Vu Van will highlight how this
innovative approach is setting new benchmarks in education, making language learning more effective and personalized, and breaking down language barriers globally.

AI-Powered Healthcare by Steven Truong
Abstract: Steven Truong, Co-Founder of VinBrain, will explore the transformative power of AI in revolutionizing healthcare, especially healthcare in Vietnam. He will delve into VinBrain s innovative products, and discuss how these solutions are addressing critical healthcare challenges, such as early disease detection, accurate diagnosis, and efficient treatment planning.

Building a Superhuman Reasoning team at Google by Thang Luong
Abstract: In this talk, he will tell his journey from Vietnam to US and how I have built a superhuman reasoning team at Google. Through this journey, he hopes to share his perspective on the future of AI and what opportunities lie ahead for Vietnam.
